31 Days of Spooktober Reads & Eats – Day 18

Day 18 – Buffy the Vampire Slayer Vol. 1 by Jordie Bellaire & Dan Mora

You all knew this was coming. I’m pretty much for everything Buffy the Vampire Slayer all year long, but if there’s ever a time for it, it’s October. So today’s read recommendation is for the newly rebooted Buffy comic book series. Overseen by the OG creator, Joss Whedon, written by a young female talent, Jordie Bellaire, and drawn by Dan Mora — this is good stuff. Really good stuff. The story resets to Buffy’s early days in Sunnydale; learning to accept her calling, challenging her watcher, Giles, and meeting the soon to be Scoobies, Willow and Xander. One big difference. It’s 2019, and Bellaire is clearly looking to make the text (and subtext) a little more accessible. And by that I mean, correct some qualms we might all have somewhere deep down in the haze of our nostalgia. Willow is an out and proud high school overachiever, Xander is struggling to figure out who he is and where he belongs, and Buffy would still really like to be a normal teenager… okay, not everything changes (Click here for my review of issue 1).

Recipe: Vampire Bite Brownies because… well, it’s obvious.
