Recipe: Turkey Tamale Pie

This Tamale Pie recipe was inspired by a chicken tamale pie recipe I found on Food Network (see here). I made some changes to create something like cheesy, baked chili, using lean ground turkey.

What you need:

  • Pan
  • Pot
  • Baking dish
  • 1 lb ground turkey (or other protein)
  • 1 tbs chili powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Pinch of cumin
  • 1.5 cups salsa
  • 15 oz black beans
  • 1.5 cups broth (I used chicken)
  • Hot sauce (Optional)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cilantro
  • 1/4 chopped green onions
  • 3/4 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar
  • 1 tbsp butter

What to do:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees
  2. In pan, cook ground turkey until pink is gone (~15 minutes)
  3. In pan, add and simmer:
    1. Chili powder
    2. Garlic powder
    3. Cumin
    4. Salsa
    5. Beans
    6. 1/2 cup broth
    7. Hot sauce (optional)
  4. Meanwhile, add cornmeal to pot with 1 cup broth and 1 cup water
  5. Bring to a simmer over medium meat, stirring until thickened (~7 minutes)
  6. Remove cornmeal from heat and stir in butter and cheese
  7. Pour turkey mixture into baking dish and smooth cornmeal on top
  8. Bake for 30 mins

Enjoy!
