Book Tag – Books that Made Your Childhood

Hi all – For NaNoWriMo this year, I’m attempting to write a Kid/Teen novel, and it’s making me think a lot about what types of stories and characters I loved as a kid. This is a tag I created to indulge in a little childhood nostalgia. Enjoy and pass along 🙂

What is the first book you remember being attached to?

Island of the Blue Dolphins (Scott O’Dell) – I remember reading this book often, and being somewhat mesmerized by it. I think I was much older before I found out that it was based on a real person.

What is the first book you remember writing a book report for?

Missing Since Monday (Ann M. Martin) – I had read this book so often that by the time I was asked to write a book report on a book of my choosing, I did so completely from memory.

What is a book you were forced to read for school, but ended up loving?

The Giver (Lois Lowry) – I read this for my 7th grade english class, and proceeded to ask my teacher if I could keep it for the summer. She said yes. To this day, it’s one of my favourite books of all time.

What is the first book you remember being given as a gift?

Flowers in the Attic (V.C. Andrews) – I was absolutely gifted MANY books before this one, but I do have a really strong memory of my grandmother buying this for me one Christmas. I was probably 12 or so. It set off a years-long Andrews obsession… it was a weird time for me.

What is a book that introduced you to one of your favourite genres?

Interview With the Vampire (Anne Rice) – Even though I eventually grew out of Rice’s writing, she gets a lot of credit for my fondness of the gothic and the supernatural.

What was the earliest book series you remember obsessing over?

Fear Street (R.L. Stine) – I gobbled these up! I recently revisited and reviewed Halloween Party.

What was a childhood book that always cheered you up?

Amber Brown (Paula Danziger) – I loved this series! It made me laugh and cry and was always a go-to on a bad day.

What is your earliest book-related memory?

Grade 1 – My mom taught me to read and write really early, so by the time I got to Kindergarden, I was already a book-lover. In Grade 1, we were given a big transparent bag of books each Monday (I think there were 5 small kids books in it). The goal was to bring them back, read, the following Monday. I brought mine back the very next day, and I’ll never forget my teacher’s shocked face. I politely asked for more.
