Crochet Pattern: Textured Scarf

Autumn is coming. Ok – that’s not as menacing as winter, but it still gets chilly! Autumn is my favourite season, for a lot of reasons. Not the least of which is that I get to start crocheting hats and scarves again. It’s not quite scarf season where I am, but it’s close enough. Today, I’m sharing a pattern I designed for a stylish, textured scarf.

Skill level: Easy

Duration: 3-5 hours

Knowledge Required (US terms):

  • Chain Stitch
  • Single Crochet Stitch
  • Berry Stitch

*If you do not know the Berry stitch, don’t worry. It will be described in the instructions, and is made up of only chain stitches and single crochet stitches.

The tools you will need for this project are as follows (US terms):

  • ~ 150 yards of yarn (I used medium weight acrylic)
  • 5 mm hook (or the appropriate size for your yarn)
  • Scissors
  • Darning Needle

The pattern will use the following abbreviations:

  • Ch(s) (Chain Stitch(es))
  • St(s) (Stitch(es))
  • SC (Single Crochet Stitch)
  • Br (Berry stitch)

Tip: You can scroll over any pictures to see a short descriptive caption for each action

Let’s get started!

Summary of pattern:

The Berry stitch (br) will create texture on one side, while remaining flat on the other. To do this, we will alternate rows between the br (sc, br, repeat), and simple sc.

We will begin with a long foundation chain, and we will increase the width and length as we go. To increase evenly, every single row will begin with 2 scs in the second st from your hook, and 2 scs in the last st.

When we are pleased with the scarf length and width, we will tie off and make the tassels (OPTIONAL).

To begin: Ch 94

Row 1: Make 2 scs in the second ch from the hook, sc across until you reach the last st, make 2 scs in the last st, ch1 and turn your work

Row 2: (This will be our br row) Make 2 scs in the second chain from the hook, br

Br st instructions: begin a sc by entering the st and pulling up a loop.

You now have 2 loops on your hook.

Through the first loop ONLY, ch 3, you still have 2 loops on your hook.

Complete your sc as usual.

The br is now complete.

If it is in your way as you continue crocheting, you can poke it forward. At the end, we will have to make sure all the brs are poked out the same side

Row 2 (Cont’d): in next st, sc. Repeat the *br, sc* pattern across until you reach the last st, make 2 scs in the last st, ch1 and turn your work.

Next Rows: Continue alternating Row 1 and Row 2 until you reach your desired length. All the berries should be on one side. If any are facing the wrong way, simply use your finger to poke them through to the other side.

To Make and Attach Tassels:

1: Grab one end of your yarn and wrap it around your hand 80 times.

2: Cut all ends on the bottom.

3: Tie an extra piece of yarn around at the middle to create the ends you will attach to the scarf.

4: Fold over and tie another piece of yarn around to create the “neck” of the tassel.

5: Trim your ends to give the tassel a clean, straight edge.

6: Make a second tassel.

7: Grab your scarf and find the turning chain at each corner. We will attach a tassel into each of these two spaces.

8: Thread one tie end of the tassel into the scarf’s corner space.

9: Secure the tassel with a knot.

10: Tie in your ends and repeat for second tassel.

All done! Drape and Enjoy 🙂
